Our coaches are trained and certified instructors and not just fighters
Every one of our coaches has completed our own 12-week Instructor Program and holds a diploma in it — a course in the science of teaching rather than in martial arts technique. It is pass or fail. We don’t just hire good martial artists; we train them to teach.

Carlos Alvarez

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and an active competitor — and completely blind, which says something about how much of grappling is feel rather than sight.

Kevin Perez
FFA Brown Belt
Teaches Adults
Coach Kevin Perez is FFA’s most attentive student of the fight game, constantly studying to become the best martial artist he can be. Besides attending classes, studying videos, reading books and attending seminars, he has travelled all over the world to gather knowledge from the source: Cuba for boxing and wrestling, Thailand for Muay Thai, and Brazil for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His passion for learning is only exceeded by his devotion to his students. Coach Kevin has a strong following at FFA and, as one of the head coaches of our MMA program, he has shaped many of our combat athletes and fighters.

Lorraine Haddad
Teaches Bootcamp
Some of the roster teaches without a competition record listed, and that is the point of the Instructor Program rather than a gap in it: what every coach here has in common is the qualification to teach. The Women Only Fitness Bootcamp is a fitness program and teaches no martial arts, so its coaches are marked as bootcamp.
Where do they teach?
All of them at 1423 SW 107th Ave, Miami, FL 33174, Across the street from FIU, in the Publix Shopping Center, with free parking outside. Frequently asked questions
- Who will actually be teaching my child?
- The children's classes at Freestyle Fighting Academy are taught by Krystal Cabrera, Camila De Las Cuevas and Edgard Plazaola. The teen classes are taught by Emmanuel Lokolo. Every one of them has completed the gym's own 12-week Instructor Program.
- How many instructors are there?
- Thirteen coaches teach across the kids, teens, adult and bootcamp programs at Freestyle Fighting Academy, and two more visit regularly to teach without being part of the weekly rotation. Every one of them has completed the gym's 12-week Instructor Program and holds a diploma in it.
- What is the Instructor Program?
- It is Freestyle Fighting Academy's own 12-week course in the science of teaching — how to deliver a lesson, handle problems and run a room — rather than in martial arts technique. It is pass or fail, and every coach on the roster has passed it. Being taught by an excellent martial artist and being taught by someone trained to teach are not the same experience.
- Who teaches the beginner adult class?
- One of the instructors on the Adult Intro Program is Brian Simril, a retired police officer who started his own training at Freestyle Fighting Academy over a decade ago for self-defense and now teaches the beginner track.
